SHUKRI YAHYA ABDI, A 12 year old angelic, funny and kind hearted little girl was taken away from her mother and 5 siblings on the 28/07/19 because she was MURDERED by her class mates. This is shukris story...
I met shukri on the school yard where she was sat alone and didn’t get up as the bell went, I walked over with a friend and helped her get to lesson. She was very shy when speaking to me at first but we fell in love with her. When I tell you she was the sweetest soul I mean it.
Since that day shukri would often follow me and my friends around at break and dinners, at first I didn’t think much of it as we loved having her around. A month or so later I realised shukri hadn’t made any friends like the rest of the people in her class.
Me and my friends would ask shukri about her lessons and what friends she had made, this topic was always weird as she wouldn’t say much and would often change the subject. We soon learnt that she was struggling to make friends because in her own words. “They’re always mean to me”
My heart breaks having to write this, when we would ask her who, she would tell us the people in her class would be mean to her and that “they don’t like me”. We immediately did something about this and informed the teachers.
At this point shukri would sit with us at dinner because no one else would let her, she would hang with us at break because no one else would let her, she became a part of our big girl group despite her being in year 7 and us being year 11. We loved her
We attended Broad Oak Highschool. Now let me tell you about this school, this exact school is the home of BULLYING, no students cries are heard. The teachers here instead of helping you they make you feel as if the reason you are getting bullied is BECAUSE OF YOU.
This is the same school that changed their name, uniform and headteacher straight after shukris death, in hopes to “CLEAR THEIR NAME” and have a “FRESH START”. This is the same school where a teacher took her own life due to being bullied by staff members.
Instead of reaching out to shukris mother straight after her death, they held a meeting with the killers of shukri to give them the “support” they needed. They did nothing to support the mother of shukri during this tragic time but did everything to support murderers.
Shukris bullying only went on in class. She was laughed at for “smelling” a certain way, she was made fun out of the way she looked, yet she didn’t let any of this get to her. She was such a vibrant girl who’s confidence grew and we got to see the funny side of her.
Towards the end of the year shukri had made a friend called Milly, she was also a refuge who was new to the UK. Shukri was really happy to have made a friend and I still remember her bringing Milly over and with the biggest smile on her face saying.”look this is my friend”
Shukri then began to sit with Milly at dinner and slowly was becoming more independent which was a huge relief for us as we knew we was going to leave soon and made us happy knowing she would have someone once were gone.
Days before we left we walked shukri home as she had a habit of always hanging around outside the gates of school at the end of the day and talk to people. This is where we met her mother and learnt the horrible truth.
Shukris mother has told us that a group of girls would follow them home and shout racial abuse towards shukris mother and her kids. They would throw little stones and then run off. Shukris mother made complaints to the school but NOTHING WAS DONE.
After Shukris death the school had denied that shukris mother came to make compliants about the bullying and acted as if they didn’t know anything. They LIED saying shukris mother never complained when in reality she did and wasn’t taken serious.
I remember sitting with shukri one day and asking her how she liked it here in the UK and in her own words “people are mean over here”. Heartbreaking, a young girl who only wanted a happy future was given hell. Yes she had happy moments but the bullying came with it.
After we left year 11 we learnt that their was an incident where the girl involved with her murder had pushed shukri infront of a bus luckily shukri was able to run back without being harmed. We also learnt that her mother had applied for a new school as the bullying was real bad
Shukris mother would ask the school to keep shukri behind after school so that she could pick her up because she feared her daughter walking home alone. Imagine your own mother fearing you walking home from SCHOOL because girls would follow you!! It shouldn’t be like that!
All these incidents then led up to her fatal murder. After school shukri was waiting outside the gates when the group of girls and couple of boys had approached her and persuaded her to come with them, she followed not knowing where they were going. They faked being her “friends”
Learning from a girl in that school she admitted being told that one of the girls had already planned to push shukri into the water as a way of “scaring her”. I will limit what I say as her case is still on going and I am not allowed to mention too much.
Shukri was then taken to Burrs river, where she clearly didn’t want to be. She didn’t know her way back, therefore had to rely on them to take her home. The girls then held shukri over the water and attempted to scare her, eventually letting go and leaving her to drown.
The girl who was supposedly responsible for pushing her in laughed as she watched shukri struggle for her life. SHE LAUGHED. No remorse, no fear. NOTHING. She left her there to drown and as for the rest of them, they ran off and came back hours later to report that she “fell in”
It took exactly 3 hours to find our precious Shukri. With bite marks on her body the police dismissed it as “a tragic accident”. Only with the pressure of the family they opened the case which is still on going. Almost a year later her killers are walking free.
Her death wasn’t seen as important because she was a BLACK MUSLIM REFUGE. I want everyone who was there during her murder to be held accountable! #JusticeForShukriAbdi
The date was 06 not 07. Sorry I wrote this really quickly so didn’t realise the typo. She passed in June x
