My team and I were allowed behind the scenes at South Korea’s main Incheon airport as a flight arrived from the US. Here is a picture thread of the measures being taken to keep arriving passengers safe, and also to prevent further infections of Covid-19
First, everything is regularly disinfected. Including the pens! When passengers arrive they have to fill in a yellow form declaring where they’ve come from and whether they have symptoms.
They will then go through the first temperature check. Just like this...
If a passenger has symptoms they will be given a consultation with a doctor on site and if the doctor thinks it’s necessary you’ll be given a Covid-19 test at this point.
If you have no symptoms you go to the next stage and download the quarantine app. There are staff there to help you. The app has to be filled in twice a day. It will be monitored by a health worker. Failure to fill it in will result in calls to you or your family to check on you.
Once you’ve got the quarantine app - the next stage is official will check your contact details. They will phone them to ensure you’ve left the correct details. You must also leave an address where you will quarantine for the next 14 days.
If you have no address in South Korea, you will be quarantined in a government facility which you will have to pay for. But you will be given food.
Next you’ve got your bags, but you can’t see family quite yet!
There’s one last check of your paperwork before you leave the airport.
Here’s where it differs if you’re a foreigner. You have to be tested at the airport! You also have to wait in a holding facility for your results (12 hours)
Koreans can be tested within 3 days of arrival.
There are special transport staff waiting to take you where you need to go in their Covid-19 suits.
Finally you get to see your family. This father sprayed his daughter down with sanitizer :)
4 million passengers have come through Incheon airport since Jan. There are 77,000 staff. Not a single staff member has contracted covid-19.
