Thread on different types of Hadith in Sunni Hadith literature
I hope this thread is beneficial In shaa Allah
Hadith Qudsi - a Hadith which is worded from the Prophet ﷺ but the meaning comes directly from Allah ﷻ
Even though Hadith Qudsi and Quran are revelations from Allah, theres a slight difference as Quranic verses are revealed in both meaning and wording to the Prophet ﷺ
Hadith Marfu’ - These Hadith are all statements and actions of the Prophet ﷺ, they are also called Hadith Nabawi.
Hadith Marfu’ usually begin with the narrator saying “I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say....”
Hadith Mawquf - Hadith which are statements and actions of the sahaba, Allah be pleased with them. They are known as mawquf because the isnad (chain of narration) stops at the sahaba and does not go back to the Prophet ﷺ himself.
Hadith Maqtu’ - Hadith which are statements or actions from the tabieen. The sanad of these Hadith stops at the tabieen and does not go back to the sahaba or to the Prophet ﷺ.
These Hadiths usually are not considered to be binding proofs in Islam.
Hadith Mutawatir - a Hadith narrated by a large amount of people that it is impossible for all of them to lie and impossible for anyone to deny.
These Hadiths are obligatory to follow and those who deny them (like the “Quranist” sect) have left the fold of Islam.
Hadith Ahad - meaning “solitary reports”, these Hadith are not mutawatir. The majority of Hadith narrated from the Prophet ﷺ are ahad hadith.
Hadith Mawdu - these are forged or fabricated Hadiths which were falsely attributed to the Prophet ﷺ
Technically, these should not even be called hadiths, but rather known as statements which were fabricated as Hadith.
