#Sudan submitted today a 28-page document to the UN Security Council laying out its position re: #GERD. It included a 3-page letter by Foreign Minister Asmaa Mohammed Abdalla. In the letter Sudan expresses its position to #UNSC: (Short Thread) ๐ 1/8
โ#Sudan is deeply concerned about #Ethiopiaโs decision to start filling the #GERD reservoir in the absence of an agreement.โ 2/8
#Sudan stressed that โwater of the Sudanese Roseires reservoir is only 15 km downstream the #GERD. With its small size (one tenth of GERD) unilateral filling of GERD put operations of Roseires, and hence the lives of millions living downstream at very high risk.โ 3/8
#Sudan requests #UNSC to โcall upon the leaders of the three countries to demonstrate their political will and commitment by resolving the few remaining issues and conclude an agreement.โ 4/8
#Sudan also requests #UNSC to โcall upon the parties to adopt the comprehensive draft Sudan has submitted as the basis for finalizing an agreement.โ 5/8
#Sudan also requests #UNSC to โdiscourage all parties from unilateral actions including starting the filling of the reservoir before reaching an agreement.โ 6/8
#Sudanโs letter ends with a sense of urgency โthe window for reaching an agreement is closing by the hour,โ but with hope that #GERD could be a historic moment & turning point for more cooperation in the Nile region. 7/8
I have read the โ#Sudan Compromise Proposalโ submitted to the #UNSC as a draft for possible final agreement between all three parties. But itโs confidential, so will not tweet about it now. Might say more later. Stay tuned! It looks very interesting. #Egypt#Ethiopia 8/8
