Lets have a detailed thread on this @vivekagnihotri so heres what Dharma means:
DHARMA : Righteous Conduct
Most organized,integrated Spiritual and practical way of life. That is for loka hits(wellfare of the creation)
Dharma takes into account,the wellbeing, peace and Harmony
Of individual, family and society and universe as a whole.
Every action as described with guidence for Individuals in our scriptures. so our Vedic scriptures help one to practice it and evolve a person has a being and also creates universal wellbeing
Valmikiramayan, aranyaknada ,sarga 9,shloka 30:
.
धर्मादर्थः प्रभवति धर्मात् प्रभवते सुखं।
धर्मेण लभते सर्वं धर्मसारमिदं जगत् ॥
.
Wealth springs from dharma, from dharma comes happiness and one gets everything from dharma.
Dharma is the essence of this world.

Shloka 31:.
आत्मानं नियमैः तैस्तैः कर्शयित्वा प्रयत्नतः ।
प्राप्यते निपुणैर्धर्मो न सुखात्  लभते सुखम् ॥
.
Dharma, which is the source of all happiness, can be attained even by a skilled person, only after observing various disciplines for his own purification and after great effort
subjecting himself to great strain and stress.  One cannot attain such dharma by leading a life given to the pleasures of the senses.
Dharma is not a knowledge just to store as Information or gain intelligences it is a guidence and way of life developing ones character has a better being not for his/her Intrest but for wellbeing of the world.
NOW LETS LOOK IF HUMANITY IS BETTER OR DHRAMA.
So there are ten principles which should be applied every day
.
1.dhriti (Patience) - patience helps one have a control over self and makes performing of work better .
2. Kshama(forgiving) - a rare Nature which will create a positive development and builds good surroundings.
3.dama(self-control): a sense of knowing that best happens to those who act right and wait.
4.asteya(honesty): don't take which doesn't belong to you and don't let go the swadharma that belongs to you. Read Gita 3,35 for why swadharma is important.
4.shauch ( scared cleanliness)
Pratice to clean mind,body and know the most pure atman
6.dhi (reason): by following above one gets a clarity of knowledge by reasoning good thoughts one can succeed in life and make world better with such qualities
7.indraiya-nigrah (control of senses) : practice of Dhyana and
Karma yoga sense controled>mind controled>intelegence controled>no destruction (lust).
why does one even does wrong what drives him for that?well arjuna asks the same question and gets the answer so Refer Gita 3.36 onwards
8. Vidya(knowledge): gaining skills that
Adds to your ability to offer value in a huge step towards success and wellfare of world by your selfless service done by gained skills/knowledge.
9: Satya guna(truthfulness) : a rare yet most important for a person is truth it saves you no matter what stand for truth.realizing
That truthfulness brings about the highest outcome good for you and world.
10. na-krodha(absence of anger) : a gate to narka is anger it can lead a person to the lowest point and he regrets actions done being slave of anger .
Gita 2.63 : " Anger leads to clouding judgement, whic
Results in bewilderment of knowledge.when the memory is bewildered,the intellect gets destroyed,and when the intellect is destroyed. ONE IS RUINED.
These 10 principles helps us know right path and live with fulfilment
DHARMA simply does not mean rites and rituals but a quality of life that results good of everyone

Practicing Dharma makes one a true human.
It is by Dharma by which humanity and human qualities are born.
