A list of former Andalusian mosques converted into churches after the Christian taking over of the Iberian Peninsula.
Note: Al-Andalus (Muslim Spain) was under Muslim control for almost 800 years:
Mezquita del Cristo de la Luz en Toledo:
Noted for being one of the best preserved Moorish mosques in Spain. It was converted into a church in 1186.
Giralda:
Unfortunately only the minaret stands from the original structure, as it had seen catastrophic damage following an earthquake.
The remaining minaret is used as a bell tower for the Church now built in the adjacent land.
Mezquita de Almonaster la Real:
It's history is almost as fascinating as its architectural appeal. The mosque itself was built on the site of 5th century Visigoth basilica. It was then converted into a Church after the Reconquista
The Church of St. Nicolas:
This is a good one. It's currently the oldest church in Madrid, and was built on the original site of the Moorish mosque, the Aljama Mosque of Meyrit. The bell tower used to be the minaret for the masjid.
Iglesia de Santiago del Arrabal:
Converted to church in 1223-25. Caliphate era minaret survives. Church is a MudΓ©jar style masterpiece. It was built in 1245-47 on prior structures of a mosque and Visigoth building
Mezquita de Alcazar:
The city of Jerez had 18 large mosques only this one survived, as it was within a fort. Converted to a church after the Inquisition.
