An important question about suicide:
Question:
It is said that suicide is forbidden in Islam & that the person who commits suicide is destined to go to Jahanum (Hell). Suppose a person is suffering from a severe case of depression, or some other mental disease. (1/2)
Question:
It is said that suicide is forbidden in Islam & that the person who commits suicide is destined to go to Jahanum (Hell). Suppose a person is suffering from a severe case of depression, or some other mental disease. (1/2)
Will he/she also go to hell?. (2/2)
Answer:
One thing which people often do is to say that such & such person will definitely go to Jannah (Heaven) or to hell. This is something over which none other than Allah has any control. (1/11)
One thing which people often do is to say that such & such person will definitely go to Jannah (Heaven) or to hell. This is something over which none other than Allah has any control. (1/11)
So to suggest that such a person goes to Jannah or Jahanum in hereafter, is an affront to Allah, because it precipitates His judgment. (2/11)
There are certain verses of the Qurโan & many Ahadiths which tell us that those who commit certain sins will be punished. But then it is up to Allah to determine what punishment fits every single case, (3/11)
Because Allah judges us individually, on the basis of His perfect knowledge of our intentions & conditions. (4/11)
It is true that suicide is strictly forbidden in Islam. It is like a person saying to Allah: โYou have given me life & I am taking it away.โ This is what is meant by the sacred Hadith in which Allah is quoted as saying of the one who commits suicide: (5/11)
โMy servant has precipitated My will with regard to himself. Therefore, I am forbidding him entry into heaven.โ But this Hadith applies to a person in full control of his faculties, suffering no overpowering adversity & having a reasonable life. (6/11)
If such a person commits suicide, then may be Allah will not allow him/her in heaven. (7/11)
A person who commits suicide as a result of a mental disorder like depression or some other severe form of anxiety is not in full control of his senses. (8/11)
We cannot say how Allah will judge such a person, but we trust the justice of Allah, because He does not deal unfairly with anyone. We pray for the person concerned, & request Allah to forgive him. (9/11)
When a man committed suicide during the Prophet Muhammadโs PBUH lifetime, Muhammad PBUH was distressed. He did not perform the janazah prayer for the deceased, but he ordered his companions to do it. (10/11)
When they did, they prayed for the man & requested forgiveness for him from Allah. This shows that the Prophet did not exclude the possibility of his/her being forgiven by Allah. (11/11)
Qur'an verses & Ahadith about suicide:
โAnd do not kill yourselves [or one another]. Indeed, Allah is to you ever Merciful.โ (Qur'an 4: 29)
โAnd do not kill the soul which Allah has forbidden [to be killed] except by [legal] right. This has He instructed you that you may use reason.โ (Qur'an 6: 151)
"He who commits suicide by throttling shall keep on throttling himself in the Hell Fire (forever) and he who commits suicide by stabbing himself shall keep on stabbing himself in the Hell-Fire." (Sahih al-Bukhari 1365)
"Whoever swears by a religion other than Islam, is, as he says; and whoever commits suicide with something, will be punished with the same thing in the (Hell) Fire; and cursing a believer is like murdering him; and whoever accuses a believer of disbelief, (1/2)
Then it is as if he had killed him." (Sahih al-Bukhari 6652) (2/2)
We should keep an open mind in educating ourselves with mental health illnesses, such as suicide. Every suicide is a heartbreak, affecting families and communities with long-lasting effects on the people left behind.
For those of you feeling suicidal, remember this beautiful Dua:
Allahumma ahyinee maa kaanat-il-hayaatu khayran lee wa tawaffanee maa kaanat-il-wafaatu khayran lee.
Allahumma ahyinee maa kaanat-il-hayaatu khayran lee wa tawaffanee maa kaanat-il-wafaatu khayran lee.
โYa Allah, keep me alive as long as life is good for me and take me away when death is better for me.โ (Sahih al-Bukhari 5671)
I pray that may Allah save us & our families from this major sin. May Allah never bring suicidal thoughts to our mind. May Allah make it easy for those who are suffering from it. Allahumma Aameen.
