Nations coordinate with the International Civil Aviation Organization and divide their airspace into Flight Information Regions (FIRs) - their main use being to provide flight information service and alerting service to flights over that region
Sometimes, the airspace is further divided vertically into upper and lower regions. India has 4 FIRs - Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chennai with a sub-region within the Kolkata FIR for Guwahati.
Interestingly, Kolkata FIR also includes the air above Bhutan.

There is another division called ADIZ - Air Defence Identification Zone that is enclosed within an FIR and is more guarded by security. In an ADIZ Region, the identification, location, and control of civil aircraft is done by the country for national security.
Only 20 countries in the world including India, China, Pakistan and Bangladesh have it. The ADIZ region of India is guarded by the Indian Air Force with proper coordination with our navy.
