you guys need to stop tweeting dumb shit. uyghurs arent the only muslim group in china or even the most prominent muslim group in china. hui people make up 48% of the muslim pop. in china. uyghurs do make up a huge percentage (41%) but the issue at hand goes far beyond religion
yes uyghurs are majority muslim and IT IS a muslim issue because beijing actively forces uyghurs go against islam but thats not how the issue started. heres why uyghurs are targeted MORE than the huis, kazakhs, dongxiang, etc etc
uyghurs are an ethnic minority in china. they reside in the xinjiang autonomous region in china. they helped a lot with the silk road which boosted chinas economy. but when the qing dynasty fell in 1911 (followed by the chinese state) uughurs wanted to ensure politcal stability
so they decided to declare independence as the East Turkmenistan Republic. once in 1933, until it was suppressed by the national chinese forces in 1934. and another time in 1944 until it was overthrown by the communist chinese forces under mao zedong in 1949
in the 90s beijing wanted to secure the xinjiang autonomous region to china. they allowed chinese settlers to take over. the han people accounted for over 2/5 of the xinjiang population. the uyghur population dropped from 82% to 49% from 1949 to 2010
uyghurs are now a minority in their homeland. they started to riot. violent attack towards the settlers increased, including suicide bombings. china started to crack down on the uyghurs and they faced shootings, arrests, and long term jail sentences.
to decrease the attacks made by uyghurs, the chinese govt added greater security including checkpoints, cameras, and constant police control in uyghur dominated areas.
now heres chinas confession. they denied the concentration camps of course. but beijing did admit to sending uyghurs to “vocational camps” and that why were free to leave when their “courses were finished”
they even went as far to say that they wanted to use xinjiang for the “one belt one road initiative,” but they found it hard for uyghur to assimilate since theyre indigenous.
many people have come forward and said they have family members missing. in the US a uyghur journalist (Gulche Hara Hoja) works for a US govt funded radio. shes been trying to get in contact with her family again. her brother first disappeared in 2017.
after that she lost contact with 23 of her family members.
i wanted to share this bc of the ignorant tweet going around abt “whAt iF thEy wErE sHiA” this didnt start because of religion. it started because china wanted to take over the uyghurs land. they HAPPEN to be muslim and china uses that against them
im also not saying that other muslim groups in china arent involved in these concentration camps or oppressed. im simply saying china didnt like the uyghurs fighting back for their land. but YES it IS a muslim issue but it didnt start because they were muslim.
