🔎The anatomy of Sadio Mané's assist for Diogo Jota's winner vs Sheffield Utd, which took 1v1 wing play to another level (short thread):
1. Tactically,Sheffield Utd have identified Mané's 1v1 threat as one of the main ways LFC can break down their low block 5 man defence, hence Wilder has instructed his midfielders (Sander Berge here) to come across to help George Baldock & make it a 2v1 to stop Mané cutting inside
2. So Mané has no option but to dribble on the outside on his supposedly weaker left foot- Baldock actually defends the first change of speed very well & denies Mané enough space to get the cross in.While Berge has diligently remained on Baldock's shoulder to stop Mané cutting in
3. However,Mané doesn't relent there, he's able to attempt another change of speed (again on his weaker left foot) & manages to shift the ball half a yard ahead of Baldock's body. Again Baldock can be happy with his job, as he's still able to get his leg in line to block the ball
4. So now Mané has to produce a cross which is:
A) On his weaker left foot
B) Flighted over Baldock's planted leg
C) In a very precise zone for Jota to head in as he has Stevens in front of him & Osborn behind him
That's exactly what he does.
Summary
•Tactically Wilder did everything to stop Mané by having 2 men on him
•Berge has then stopped him cutting inside
•There are many wingers who have been able to shfit speed on their stronger foot & generate just enough space to cross. But twice on his weaker foot 👏
