As a Teaching Assistant,you have a teaching responsibility which you must fulfill. Usually you teach undergraduate students, and/or grade their homeworks and exams. Your work is 20hrs per week on the max.
As a Research Assistant,you're fully devoted to research.More like you're

employed to work in the lab. Of course the research work is still your own research work or for the group you belong.
The monthly stipend you're paid either as TA or RA is actually for the work you do. There's no free money.
Your tuition fee is also waived by the University

That's the major way graduate studies are funded in the US. Any extra scholarship or grant is "jara" for you
So next time you're searching through US schools,you want to look out for information about Assistantships
Many schools/departments will not admit you if they can't fund

you.Some schools admit you and give you assistantship after your 1st semester or 1st year. That means you'll pay tuition for the 1st semester/year
It is usually competitive,that is why it's a good idea to have all your application materials complete and apply to more than 1 schl

So before you apply to that school, check their policy on their site and contact your department to be sure funding is available
Funding sometimes is seasonal.
