While the conventional meanings of 1st, 2nd and 3rd world countries is associated with their economic status, the original terms were used to identify which ideology a nation sided during the Cold War - American Capitalism (1st) or Soviet Socialism (2nd) or Neither (3rd)
Because many countries in the Third World were impoverished, the term became a 'polite' way to refer to the poor world. Today, these terms have been replaced with the more politically correct "Developing" and "Developed" nations.
While many countries including India are happy with the terms, there are voices in dissent calling the term "Developing" patronizing. npr.org
