I don't know why but so many ppl asked me abt the meaning of「商品の目玉」today regarding an extract below despite Kasumi and Aiko have presented precise explanations already🤨 So I asked my informant "kk" for the entire article to grasp the context. It's
Dec 24 here in Japan y'all🎄 I'd be the most happy to see you taking the entire article as my Christmas gift🎅👐🎁
The article below was from a magazine Brutus issued Dec 1st 2014, the famous psychiatrist Tamaki Saito to Interview Mr. Isayama to
analyze his creativity from what Yams thought and spoke during the convo.
Throughout the article, they were talking abt Yam's work of manga art a.k.a. SnK.
商品→noun, meaning of "product"
の→post positional particle, equivalent to "of"
目玉→noun, direct meaning of "eyeball", figurative expression of "featured centerpiece"
Since entire convo was abt SnK, you can see the meaning of 商品 as manga SnK itself.
Thus you can translate 商品の目玉 that Yams meant here as "The featured centerpiece of manga product SnK."
Now take a look at the extract below, from page 4.
Saito: You created the world view first, then you created characters for the world view?
Yams: Yes. I created the world setting first, and next I created characters as if I hire the actors to play out the necessary roles for my story.
Saito: Was Eren the first character you created for SnK?
Yams: It was Mikasa.
Saito: Mikasa is so-called "Battling pretty girl". I've heard she is an endearing character for simps that you created in the calculated way.
Yams: I've been planning to make Mikasa 商品の目玉 (The featured centerpiece of manga product SnK) from the start.
[end of the extract]
If Mikasa wasn't a protagonist, then how could she be the centerpiece of SnK? Here's the example;
There's an industrial blockbuster film (product) called Mad Max: Fury Road. In that film, Max (played by Tom Hardy) was protagonist, yet
featured centerpiece character was Furiosa whose popularity was the biggest in the opus, enough for production to make a spinoff. Production spent $20mil? $30mil? to hire Charlize Theron who was renowned, skillful, at the same time being able to
attract the audiences. Audiences went to theater to watch her, and maybe Immortan Joe.
See? This is what industry means when they call a character as 商品の目玉=The featured centerpiece of product (opus).
Alright, enough for my boring lecture-like
Christmas gift, haha🤣
Fun fact time!😆
The extract below is from page 6.
Yams: The cliche endearing girl characters for simps usually have very big eyes. Those huge eyes always makes me wonder what's wrong with their skulls. I love slit eyes lol.
Oh OK, he loves slit eyes, huh? Yeah, that's why the other interview sounds very familiar. Makes sense😆
