1.BUDDHA ON ANCIENT BRAHMINS
2.Criticisim of brahmans in the Buddha’s time
3.BUDDHA's definition of TRUE BRAHMIN
This will clear All doubts
1.Buddha Uvacha-
• They were SEERS, austere& restrained in mind.Abandoning the five strings of sensuality
•They hadno cattle,no gold,no wealthThey had study as their wealth
•They protected the Brahma treasure
•protecting their principles,protected by law
•For 48 yearsfollowed the holy life.Brahmans of old practiced the searchfor knowledge & conduct.
•Brahmans went to no other (caste)
nor did they buy their wives. Living together from mutual love, having come together, they found joy together
•They praised:the holy life, virtue,
being straightforward, mild, austere,
composed, harmless, enduring
•The foremost brahman among them,
firm in perseverance, didn’t engage in copulationeven in a dream
•They asked for rice, bedding, cloth, butter & oil.Having collected all
.,from that, they performed the sacrifice. And in setting up the sacrifice, they didn’t harmCOWS
Becoz of knowing following reasoning-
“Like a mother, father, brother, or other relative, cows are our foremost friends.
From them comes medicineThey give food, strength, beauty, & happi.'
•Delicate, with large bodies,
beautiful, prestigious, brahmans were committed to standardsof what should & shouldn’t be done in line with their principles. As long as this lasted in theworld, humanity prospered in happiness
~2:7 Suttanipat,KN,Transl. by Thanissaro Bhikkhu
Buddha earlier said that"Brahmans at present don’t live in conformity with the brahman principles of ancient brahmans"
¶In Pārāyana Vagga,V, Suttanipat,KN there is clear Cut description that some individual brahmans in the present were still holding to those good traditions
But he maintained that, by and large, brahmans of the "present"(buddha's time) day had fallen away from the good traditions of their past .
There is description of Good brahmin named "Bhavari" who had mastered mantras, aspiring to "nothingness"
Now by This Single statement...the Tyre of CLAIM that buddha invented "nothingness" Gets punctured。
By BUDDHISTs text themselves.
But in Later debates Brahmin said that they are aspiring unification with brahma (or going brahmlok)
Now Let see how buddha praises Bhavari
“His age is 120and by clan, he is a Bāvarī.Three are the marks in his body,
three the Vedas he’s mastered. In the marks & oral traditions, etymologies & rituals,he teaches five hundred,In his own doctrinehe has reached perfection”
~Buddha
“He can hide his face with his tongue,
he has a tuft of hair between his brows,
his male organ is in a sheath:"(state after Yogic ..)
"“May he be happy,Bāvarī the brahman, together with his students[ 16 stu.]And may you, too, be happy, young brahman, and live a long time"
2. Now Many verses of Sutta Nipata focus on criticizing the practices of brahmans in the Buddha’s time, these are
~useless austerities
~Philosphical debates
~Superstition
~Animal Sacrifice
~Outer Purity by Rituals
~Purity by CASTE
In Return Brahmins also criticized buddha for
~eating meat (however he was against meat eating in Mahayan sutras/and allowed in specific occasion in pali canon)
~ Doing No work
Further whole pali canon there are many many story like this
3.TRUE definition of BRAHMIN
By Buddha
From DHAMMAPADA 386- 391
~To him there is no further shore. To him there is no near shore
eitherTo him both these shores are nonexistent. He is free of anxiety and is freed from bondsThat person I describe as a Brahmin
~He is given to concentrated contemplation. He is free of all
blemishes – the dust that defiles a being. He sits in solitude. All
his spiritual tasks and obligations are done. He has reached the
highest goal. That person I describe as a Brahmin
~One has got rid of sinful action is called a BRAHMIN. One of
serene senses is called samana. A person is called pabbajita
because he has done away with all his faults
"No one should strike a BRAHMIN – the pure saint. The brahmin who has become the victim must refrain from attacking
the attacker in return, or show anger in return. Shame on him
who attacks a brahmin; greater shame on him who displays
retaliatory anger"
"If an individual is well guarded in body, in speech, and in
mind, and has done no wrong in these three areas, who is well
restrained, I call that kind of person a true brahmin– the
noble saint"
Likewise there are many Verses in Buddhist scriptures ..
Conclusion :: India is land of Spritual Tradition ,Buddha was Enlightened Master he OPPOSSED wrong Practices ,
Unfortunately ,new BUDDHISTs haven't read their original manual and keep barking based on WRONG hypothesis and WRONG Understanding
