Interesting story . Maurya India was a wooden wonder .

Very interesting story . Throws much light on the logistics of the time .
Though most Indian merchants exchanged their goods at Socotra or ports below Bab el Mandab , some went further , even to Mediterranean (old Canal was called Nalamāla)
On the duties of Superintendent of Shipping (Arthashastra) . State must have owned fleets of Sea Going Ships , which were manned by Government employed Captain , Navigator and crew . Took the merchants to overseas markets for a good fees ofcourse .
There were also private ships owned by all sorts of people - Kings , businessmen , Nobles , Captains etc .
Rangers of the forest protecting trade routes from Wild beasts and Robbers.
