(1) #Thread on the #Maratha #Cavalry: Part-2
This is the continuation of the previous thread on Maratha cavalry.
The Part-1 of the thread 👇
(2)
The first reported invasion of #Marathas in #Malwa occurred in 1699.
Krushnaji Sawant, a Maratha general, at the head of 15000 cavalry, crossed Narmada and ravaged some places near Dhamuni & returned.
(3)
In 1703, Nemaji Shinde once again burst into Malwa's Berar region with 50,000 horses. He defeated and captured Rustam Khan, raided the Hoshangabad.
Afterwards, Nemaji Shinde crossed the Narmada & advanced till Sironj.
(4)
In the time of Chatrapati Shahu, Marathas got a heavenly-born cavalry leader - Shrimant Bajirao Peshwa (1720-1740)
Bajirao Peshwa was especially known for his rapid, long marches with his horses, inherited from the generals - Santaji Ghorpade & Dhanaji Jadhav.
(5)
His famous Battle of #Palkhed (1728), in which he takes #Nizam into a long drawn battle, finally trapping him at a place & cutting off his supplies.
This particular battle was hailed as "masterpiece of strategic mobility" by British Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery
(6)
With same tactics he fought the #Bundelkhand battle against Muhammad Khan Bangash in 1729.
Bajirao, with his lightning fast long marches of 40 miles/day (64 km/day), came and dashed on #Delhi in 1737. He himself writes this in his letter to Chimaji Appa 👇
(7)
The #cavalry of #Peshwa consisted of four classes:
1. The Khasgi Paga
2. The Silledars
3. The Ekas
4. The Pendharis
Of these the Khasgi Paga or Peshwa's private cavalry was by far the best. They were an elite cavalry force with a well equipped & choice body armed.
(8)
According to Kashiraj Pandit, the Khas Paga in the Panipat War was not more than 6000 out of total 18000 cavalry under different chiefs. With this we can see, the Khas Paga (or Huzurat) were less in number, but they were the best.
(9)
The Pendharis were unemployed and exclusively used for scorched-earth tactics. They were unencumbered by unnecessary baggage & could travel 30-40 miles/day. They used the Cossack-like tactics to strike into an enemy's territory.
(10)
The #cavalry force of Marathas was mostly armed with muskets and matchlocks, swords, spears, lances, daggers, bows and arrows.
Some weapons are as shown 👇
