VIRATESHWAR TEMPLE, SOHAGPUR BAGHELKHAND MADHYA PRADESH
History
It is one of the finest monument built by the Kalachuri rulers and is datable to circa 11" century AD., on stylistic considerations of art and architecture
Architecture
The temple stands on a richly decorated jagati and faces east. On plan, it comprises of an ardhamandapa, (Maha) Mandapa and antrala followed by square garbhagriha. The garbhagriha nearly 3 m square in size is enshrined with Siva linga and jaladhari.
The elevation of the temple is divisible into five major parts viz: peetha, vedibandha, jangha, varandika and sikhara. The sikhara is of sapta ratha type. It has 21 bhumi amalakas on the four corners. The top of shikahara is surmounted by amalaka, chandrika amalasarika and kalasa
The sukhanasika has an image of Tandava Shiva within the medallion. Mandapa seems to have had a beautiful pyramidal roof as evidenced the remnants
Special Feature
A multi armed dancing Shiva, is of great interest of this temple. Several mithuna and other figures have a close
resemblance to the sculptures of khajuraho. The temple bears influence of Chandella and Parmara art of the coeval period
