#Thread on the Heroic Resistance & Reconquista of the Deccan kingdoms vs the Delhi Sultanate (1294 - 1336 CE)
It was out of this struggle that the mighty Vijayanagara Empire was born.
2.
1294: Delhi Sultanate's first incursion south of Vindhyas, vs. Yadava kingdom of Ramchandra Yadava. Delhi gained some territory & wealth after peace talks.
1303: Sultanate's Gujarat invasion. Gujarat king Karna Vaghela sought refuge at Ramchandra Yadava's court
3.
1307: Sultanate's Yadava invasion. Yadava kingdom vassalised. But next year, Ramchandra Yadava died & his successor, Shankardev Yadava stopped the tribute to Delhi.
Delhi's invasions of Kakatiya (Warangal), Hoysala (Halebidu) & Pandya (Malabar) kingdoms followed till 1310.
4.
1312: Khilji got Shankardeva Yadava beheaded for not paying tribute. Harpaldeva Yadava succeeded & he stopped the tributes again after 2 years!
1316: Alauddin Khilji died amidst revolts in Rajputana, Deccan & Gujarat
1318: Yadava territory was brutally annexed by Khiljis 👇
5.
1323: Delhi invaded Kakatiyas for the 4th time & annexed after 3 earlier unsuccessful attempts.
Harihar & Bukka with the other 3 Sangama brothers fled from Warangal to the Kampili kingdom (👇). This kingdom was founded by earlier Yadava vassal, Singeya Nayaka, in 1294.
6.
1325: However, just 2 years after Kakatiyas fall, a Hindu confederacy of *75 Hindu chiefs* arose in Telangana & Andhra Pradesh regions to uphold Dharma.
Prolaya Nayaka led this confederacy, which included a gifted chieftain, Prolaya Vema Reddi too.

1326-7: Meanwhile, a Delhi sultanate rebel, Bahaudin Gurshasp, was given refuge at Kampili. Delhi sultanate invaded Kampili.
Kampili's capital fort Anegundi was besieged. Women underwent Jauhar & the fort fell in Delhi hands.
Harihara & Bukka were among the prisoners taken.

The Hindu confederacy, found in ~1325, was on a reconquista spree throughout Andhra Pradesh, Telangana & N. Tamil Nadu for a decade, almost resembling the former Kakatiya lands.
The new leader of the confederacy - Kapaya Nayaka - allied with Hoysalas to handle Mleccha menace.
9.
Together, the alliance bloc freed Warangal, Andhra coastline, & north Tamil Nadu (Tondaimandalam) from Muslim control. They approached the Anegundi area once again.
1335: Delhi sent Harihara & Bukka (forced-converts) to guard Anegundi, but were defeated by the Hindu bloc.
10.
1336: After the defeat, Harihara & Bukka, wandering as refugees, meet Sage Vidyaranya. Vidyaranya convinces them for reconversion into Hindu fold again.
Sage Vidyaranya also advised them to establish Hindu kingdom as representative of Bhagwan Virupaksh, centered at Hampi.

Harihara I was coronated on 18 Apr 1336.
Thus, the Empire of Vijayanagar was born & forged by the struggles against Delhi Sultanate, & wisdom of Sage Vidyaranya.
The empire formed the Hindu bulwark of South against Muslim onslaught.
