[🧵]Short thread on the correct understanding of the jamāʻah and how the people of knowledge understood it
Anas bin Malik said:
“I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: ‘My nation will not unite on misguidance, so if you see them differing, follow the great majority.’”

Due to this ʾḥadīṯ there is an incorrect understanding that the jamāʻah refers to the majority of believers in total
Imām at-Tirmidhī رَحِمَهُ ٱللَّٰهُ said: "The explanation of the Jamāʻah according to the people of knowledge is; the people of fiqh, ʿIlm and ʾḥadīṯ"

He then cited: I heard Ali bin Al-Hasan say:"I asked ibn Al- Mubārak: 'Who is the jamāʻah?' So he said: Abū Bakr & Umar. It was said to him: Abū Bakr & Umar have died. He said: So & so. It's said to him: So & so have died. So Al-Mubārak said: "Abū Hamzah As-Sukkari is a Jamā'ah"
Al-Fuḍayl ibn ʻIyāḍ رَحِمَهُ ٱللَّٰهُ said:
عليك بطريق الهدى وإن قل السالكون، واجتنب طريق الردى وإن كثر الهالكون
"Follow the path of guidance even if those who follow it are in the minority, and avoid the path of destruction even if those who are doomed are in the majority"

It's clear from these statements that the jamāʻah is defined by the truth and not the amount of followers
