Congratulations, students, you’ve matched! 🎉
Or, small chance, not. But regardless, it has been determined. The rank lists aren’t changing in the coming days, nor the algorithm that processes them.
To me that was a comforting thought back in the day. Hope for you too...

But if that’s the case, why is there ~2 weeks between rank lists and results?
Anyone know? @jbcarmody

The reason I wonder is because of this 👇🏼. This year’s virtual interviews saved not only carbon but lots of time and money for all.
But it’s hard to say nothing was lost.

What are we gonna do next year?
It’s hard to imagine forgoing the convenience of virtual interviews.
But when travel is safer, many students will want to visit some places in person, and many programs won’t want to say a cold no to that option.

But the problem with offering either/or is that students will feel pressure to come in person in order to emphasize their interest and hope to make a stronger impression.
And this may further advantage well-to-do students, and exacerbate many unfortunate inequities.

What if we keep interviews all virtual. But create an option for second looks in person, AFTER programs certify their list but BEFORE the students do.
This won’t cause undue pressure to visit and advantage those who can.
And it will cut travel CO2 a lot from baseline.

In order to be feasible, we’d need to put time between program and student list certifications.
It's hard to rush programs much more than they are. But could the student due date be pushed back without delaying match day?
That’s where the @TheNRMP processing time comes in.

Say...
3/1/22: Program ROL due
3/13/22: Student ROL due
3/14/22: @TheNRMP outputs start releasing, beginning with unmatched as usual.
3/17/22: Match day
Why not? Is it not all digital, algorithmic? Are outputs not automated? If not, could they be?

Curious what students and program folks think about any/all this. And if anyone has special insights into the process, please share.
