#Thread on the occasion of Battle of Lakhnauti's 776th anniversary.
This battle was fought on 14 March,1245 between Izzuddin Tughral Tughan Khan (Delhi Sultanate's Bengal Governor), & Narasimhadeva-I (Orissa King of Eastern Ganga dynasty)

Lakhnauti is another name of Gour, situated today near the Bangladesh border. It was the capital of Bengal province of Delhi Sultanate.

Before sieging down Lakhnauti in 1245, Narasimhadeva-I's army had captured the Lakhanor quarters in the Rarh region (called Rฤแธha - เคฐเคพเคขเคผ)
Lakhanor's commandant, Fakhrulmulk Karimuddin Laghri was killed, and the place was sacked.

The Rarh region, located on the eastern banks of Ganga, formed one half of the Bengal province, while the other half lay beyond the Ganga. That region was known as Varendra.
The capital fort of Lakhnauti (Gour) was in the way!

The ambitious Narasimhadeva-I desired to subjugate both the Muslim territories. Hence, he dashed onto the Lakhnauti fort and besieged it.
Seeing the Hindu forces at the gates of his capital, the Bengal governor sent calls for help to the Delhi Sultan.

However, the help was not to arrive in time.
1245, 12 March: Izzuddin Tughral Tughan Khan sallied out of the fort & fought Narasimhadeva's army.
Minhajuddin describes Narasimhadeva's army to have war elephants & 'paiks' (footmen)

The Odia army was victorious, and they occupied the capital fort of Lakhnauti!

1245, 30 Apr: The help, which Izzuddin Tughral Khan had requested, arrived under Qamruddin Tamur Khan (Delhi Sultanate's Ayodhya Governor)
But, the 'helper' Qamruddin made Izzudin give up the province of Bengal & sent him to Delhi.

In the meantime, Narasimhadeva, having the Gour fort under his control, proceeded to harass the Muslim territories of Varendra.
He returned to Odisha with his armies at the onset of monsoon.

A 1295 grant describes the aftermath of Battle of Lakhnauti.
'The river Ganga was blackened, and rendered waveless by the tears of Yavanis of Rฤแธha & Varendra'

Narasimhadeva's victories against Delhi Sultanate inspired the title of 'Yavan-avani-vallabha' on him.

This was just one, among the series of aggressive campaigns of Narasimhadeva-I in his 26-year-long reign.
His proactive policy against Muslim imperialism proved effective & stopped Muslim incursions for the next century!
