Not only were the women educated in ancient times, but we also find them in the position of teachers as well. The term Upādhyāyā exclusively denotes a lady who is a teacher. Whereas Upādhyāyānī is used for the Guru's wife who may or may not be educated.
Panini refers to boarding houses for lady students chhātrīsālās which were most probably under the superintendence of female teacher.
Not only this but co-education was also not unknown back then. In India as Known to Panini, a list of undesirable students mentions +
... the ones who joins a teacher to get access to the female students under that teacher.
