This is the ancient way of describing melanin. The word did not originate with the Roman name of some general. We find the word in Europe long before the Romans. For example, the Greeks used it in their name for their goddess of joy, Aphrodite (pronounced AFROdite).
Eurocentrics try to hide truth with nonsensical spellings so you don't see the reality to things. Aphrodite/Afrodite's name came from the fact that she was from Africa/Afraka; this is evidence that the name dates way before the Romans who based their culture after the Greeks.
Afrodite is the Greek version of Het-heru, the Ancient Nile goddess of joy. As the bringer of wealth, Het-heru was symbolized by the cow (often cow horns or ears), which was the unit of wealth in Africa since the most ancient of days.
Her head stood at the top of pillars in Kemet. Even today, European architecture employs this Classical African goddess in modern buildings.
