Some statements of the Salaf in affirming a Makaan for Allah ﷻ
a. The famous hadith of Nuzul, which has the statement <<...So Allah remains in His Place (Makaan) until Fajr.....>>
[Narrated by Daraqutni in his discussion of Nuzul]
b. Mujahid رَحِمَهُ ٱللَّٰهُ
He said about the saying of Allah «And We brought him (Musa) near» [19:52] :
"Between the 7th heaven and the Arsh there are 70,000 veils [of Allah]. And Musa came close until between him and Allah there was only one Veil, then Musa ...
saw His Place (Makaan), and heard the sound of the Pen, and he said : My Lord, let me see You"
[Narrated by Ibn Jarir (71/16), Adh Dhahabi said in his Al Arsh (166/2) : This has been authentically reported on the authority of Mujahid who is an imam of Tafsir]
c. Hammad Ibn Zayd رَحِمَهُ ٱللَّٰهُ
Khallal said in his Sunnah, that Sulayman Ibn Harb narrated that Bishr asked Hammad Ibn Zayd '"O Abu Isma'il, the hadith in which it has come that « Allah Descends....», does He Shift from one Place to another?"
Hammad Ibn Zayd remained
silent, then he said : He is in His Place (Makaan), He comes close to His creation however He wishes'
[Sunnah of Al Khallal and Dar At Ta'arud]
d. Fudayl Ibn Iyyad رَحِمَهُ ٱللَّٰهُ
He said "If a Jahmi says to you : I disbelieve in a Lord that Descends from His Place
Then reply : I believe in a Lord that does whatever He wishes"
[Narrated by Bukhari in his Khalq Af'aal Al Ibaad (61)]
As for affirming a Jihhah or a direction of Uluw or Aboveness to Allah, then we have plenty of statements from the salaf not only affirming
an Uluw, but also takfiring those that reject an Uluw for Allah
Ibn Qudamah narrates an ijma' on the salaf affirming an Uluw :
And from the salaf and their students that takfired those who denied an Uluw for Allah, and that He was upon His Throne are many, amongst them :
Ad Darimi (rh) while discussing the hadith about the slave girl and her affirming that Allah is above the heavens, says
"And this hadith is an evidence upon a man who does not know that Allah is in the heavens instead of the earth (i.e everywhere) then he is not a mu'min..."
And Allah knows best
