How to Outrank Big Brands Like Sephora and Nike!
Every now and then, clients come to me saying, “But how are we supposed to outrank [insert Fortune 500 company]? That’s impossible!”
No, it’s not.
I’ve done it time and time again.
And today, I’ll show you how.

The secret is building topical relevancy!
Topical relevancy, in a nut shell, is the degree to which your site is relevant about a particular topic.
If you own a website all about cars, and every page on your site talks about cars, you’ll have high topical relevancy for cars.
As a result, it’ll be a lot easier for you to rank for competitive keywords related to cars.
Why is this the case?
Because Google prefers to rank experts rather than generalist.
Let’s say you want to rank for the keyword “best cars for racing”.
It’s going to be a lot easier to rank a site for that keyword that’s solely about cars, rather than a site that talks about cars, planes, trains and boats.
Again...
Expert > Generalist
So how do you build topical authority to outrank bigger brands?
We take the idea of topical authority, and look at it from a page-level.
We create a page that we see as our main “topic” and build clusters of topically relevant content linking back to it.
Those clusters improve the relevancy of that topic and help it rank.
Let’s say we want to rank a page for the keyword “gym joggers” and beat out Nike, as I was able to do.
We’d build a main collection page targeting that keyword with the products listed.
Then write topically relevant blog content linking back to that page.
Examples include:
- best gym joggers
- what are gym joggers
- material for gym joggers
- gym joggers that last
I like pulling these long-tail keywords from the tool Answer the Public.
The key is to make sure you internally link from the cluster to the topic page.
And that’s all there really is to it.
We’ve been crushing the game with this strategy for clients of ours.
Now use it for yourself, and outrank all the bigger brands that get by purely on a powerful link profile!
