Lalsot 1787, was a Maratha victory.
Maratha retreated as defections happened.
Muhammad Beg Hamdani played the card of Islam and made Muslim captains in Maratha army defect playing the islam card.
They took the Maratha manufactured heavy guns (tech at par with Brits) with them.
And that was just before the start of the battle. 👆
Yet, this is how things progressed. 👇
Fyi, Pratap Singh Machari was Jaipur Raja's own clan rival. who sided with Marathas in Lalsot. 😬😯
As can be seen here, part of Khanderao's troops majorly inclusive of Marathas formed DeBoigne's newly raised units.
Hence the propaganda that DeBoigne was autonomous with majorly purbiyas troops is wrong to say the least.
DeBoigne was under Khanderao & then Ingale
Back to the Battle.
The Battle took a new turn when, Hamdani considering Machari Raja as the weak link, started the attack on Maratha army by initiating attack on Machari Raja.
Machari Raja cracked under pressure, but Maratha troops under Mahadji's trusted lieutenant Rane Khan came to his aide in the nick of time.
Resultantly, Hamdani got slain and 200 kachwas lost their lives.
Situation got dire for rathore faction, on knowing the comprehensive defeat of kachwas under daulatram.
Allegedly (Brit sources) Rathores under a opium induced fury charged upon Maratha troops.
However,Khanderao's newly trained division by DeBoigne caused Rathore line to falter.
Such co-ordinated fire and discipline, Rathores had not faced before and were thrown into confusion.
At this critical juncture, the rest of Maratha infantry, was ordered to attack the Rathore cavalry in support of Khanderao's troops commanded by DeBoigne.
The sight of a group of infantry soldiers charging against mounted skilled horsemen, would have been truly glorious.
And glorious indeed was the outcome.
Rathores suffered around 600 casualties that day on Lalsot !
Whereas,Maratha casualties were much lesser, around 100 killed and 200 wounded.
Not only did Rajputs lose their 5 key commanders alongwith Hamdani, but Marathas also captured 150 horses from them and their standards.
Clearly a Maratha victory at Lalsot, even if tactical one said.
The Rajputs were pushed back.
But despite this tactical victory, food supplies were hard to ensure as Jaipur loyalists were a hindrance.
+ Remaining mughal battalion showed signs of rebellion.
When Shinde disbanded them, they all went over to the enemy.
The second wave of defection was the final straw as the rebels took the artillery alongwith them.
Hence the decision to retreat was taken.
However the harassing rajput attacks on retreating Marathas in hope of capturing loot was soundly repulsed.
However, by 1788 Mahadji Shinde's position had considersbly improved.
The defection caused earlier mostly by purbiya troops under the mughal commanders mentioned earlier, was replaced by fresh Maratha troops from Jamgaon in Maharashtra.
It reinvogarated the Maratha spirit
