An analysis on ShΕ«hei Hisagi:
This thread will draw quite a bit from Can’t Fear Your Own World so be aware of that.
Hisagi is often described as the model Soul Reaper, a man who embodies all of the philosophies and ideologies of what it means to be a member of the Gotei 13.
As the Lieutenant of 9th Division he carries on the Will of Kaname Tosen.
Hisagi’s model of a Soul Reaper which he bases himself on is rooted in his childhood when he is saved by Kensei who would go on to become his Captain.
An innate desire to protect the cycle of life lives at Hisagi’s very core.
He comes into the Gotei 13 Hisagi becomes the Lieutenant to the then Captain of Squad 9 Kaname Tosen who teaches him the principles which make up the remaining aspects of Hisagi’s character.
Tosen teaches Hisagi the meaning of fear and how fear must be the core of self belief.
Tosen’s betrayal of the Soul Society creates a ripple effect throughout the Gotei 13 but none are affected so heavily as Hisagi and Saijin, Tosen’s protege and his best friend.
Throughout CFYOW we see the reverberation of Tosen’s betrayal and how it affects Hisagi.
If Tosen had betrayed the Gotei 13 then was everything Hisagi had come to believe a lie alongside Tosen?
CFYOW is a journey of self discovery for Hisagi as he delves into the depths of the past and comes to understand Tosen’s legacy and his will.
Tosen is deeply tied in with fear and this is conveyed by his Bankai.
He teaches Hisagi that a warrior must always fear battle and fear the blade they wield.
This creates a divide within Hisagi that carries much of CFYOW as Hisagi is caught between the teachings of fear ingrained in Tosen’s legacy as well as the desire to protect the cycle of life that makes up his ideologies as a Soul Reaper.
We learn that this distortion within Hisagi’s ideals blocks his capacity to accept himself and unlock his Bankai.
Kazenishi resembles a scythe, a physical embodiment of Hisagi’s desire to be the ideal soul reaper which unintentionally clashes with his obsession with fear.
Hisagi fears Kazenishi and its desire for β€œofferings” whenever he tries to communicate with his Zanpakuto spirit.
Believing that his sword is designed to take life he shows a core misunderstanding of himself.
In being prepared to sacrifice himself to protect Hikone, Hisagi comes to understand that one must fear their blade but cannot afford to fear death itself if they are to truly protect the cycle of life.
Upon coming to understand himself he comes to understand Kazenishi and fulfils the conditions to complete his Bankai.
It is often said that Bankai represents a Soul Reaper’s personality and this brings us to Fushi no Kōjyō
Hisagi’s desire to protect the cycle of life manifests literally through Fushi no Kyoji which redistributes reaitsu between those caught in it’s chains to create functional immortality.
An infinite cycle of life and death within a Bankai represents Hisagi’s soul.
Hisagi learns to act in the face of fear in order to protect is Tosen’s true teaching and that though Tosen may have strayed from his path, Hisagi carries on the path of respect for fear.
In using his blade to end the monstrous Tosen, Hisagi inherited his will.
I’ll leave this excerpt from Can’t Fear Your Own World to finish off as I feel it perfectly encapsulates Hisagi and his ideologies.
As always let me know if you think I’ve misunderstood something or if I’ve missed anything.
There is a significant amount from CFYOW about Tosen and Aizen that is perhaps a thread unto itself to tie in with the symbolism of Tosen’s death.
I hope you enjoyed.
