“Militant unity and solidarity!” — North Korean poster from 1969 celebrating the country’s friendship with Cuba. The two nations forged close relations through the 1960s, collaborating economically and culturally and celebrating the friendship through propaganda.
The move towards this close relationship began with Che Guevara visiting North Korea in December 1960 and praising the country as a model for revolutionary Cuba.
Guevara’s visit, during which he met with Kim Il Sung and delivered a speech in Pyongyang, helped establish the friendly relations between the two countries, and was followed up with several subsequent visits.
Over the following years the two countries would sign a number of trade agreements as well as establish other cultural and scientific cooperative programmes, including scholarships for Cuban students to study in North Korea.
