Italy's attacking shape changed in this game when we compare it to the one we've seen used against Turkey & Switzerland.
Bastoni & Toloi take up advanced roles, replacing what would have been Barella/Locatelli.
Verratti also dictated play from the backline when in possession.
This is done so that the Italian wingers occupy the Welsh wingbacks, allowing Toloi (RB) to attack Williams w/ Chiesa.
Bastoni plays a role similiar to the one he plays for Inter. Moving from LCB -> LB in possession. This allows him to attack Roberts w/ Emerson and Bernardeschi.
Italy could also shift into a back three when Verratti dropped into the backline, giving Italy options in how they want to progress the ball.
An immediate overload is created in the middle third to beat the first line of the Welsh press due to Verratti's role.
If Italy move the left, we see the back three shift into a back two with Bastoni encouraged to join the attack.
This forces Wales to commit more players to defend the wide areas, creating space in the left half-space and central space for the Italians to exploit.
Italy's ball progression is reliant on the changing of roles from the Italian players.
The Italian's must be able to move from different positions and play different roles in order to create space in the Welsh low-block.
taly's ball progression took place on both flanks, despite how often they attacked the left side against Turkey and Switzerland.
This just further shows that Italy are comfortable occupying different areas of the pitch with players versatile enough to excel in them.
Wales struggled to play out from the back & were forced to play long due to Italy's pressing structure.
The 3 forwards are able to press Rodon, Ampadu & Mepham from behind, making them bad passing options.
The 2 wide forwards shield the wingbacks, removing them as options.
The only option left for Wales to kick it long into midfield, where Verratti and Pessina would specifically target Morrell and Allen, giving Jorginho the ability to press wherever the ball goes to.
Despite Italy rotating heavily, they were still able to play fluid, attacking football in a different manner than the one we have seen so far.
Versatility allows for infinite options, meaning that a versatile team can be hard to predict and defend against.
