Journey of a chaiwala, roadside tea stall to now owning multiple franchises across India, creating entrepreneurs & jobs.
Here’s a thread on MBA Chaiwala 4 year journey👇:
The journey was inspired by a failure, I did not get to enter my dream MBA college, but I did not want to stop or waste any time.
To earn a living, I took a job at McDonald's as a cleaner.
I was enjoying it as I was interacting with hundreds of new people every single day.
Soon I realized I’m not growing enough by working at McDonald’s. Hence, I decided to start something of my own.
I love chai as it was the only thing that helped while preparing for CAT.
"Jis chai ne meri soch ko zinda rakha usi chai ko maine apna dhandha bana liya".❤️
It took me 50 days to set up a chai stall and I didn't even told my parents about this. (Imagine to setup a chai stall, it takes 50 days in India, this has to change)
With an initial investment of Rs. 8000, I began my journey of brewing chai on a roadside stall & called it “Mr.Billore Chaiwala”
The very first day I made a sale of Rs. 0. Yes, I was sad and upset but I wasn't disheartened.
I then thought, "How can I stand out of the crowd? How can I be unique?"
I started approaching people and started asking them in English, "Would you like to have some chai?"
People were surprised. They were thinking who is this English-speaking Chaiwala?
I started getting connected with people.
On that day, I earned my first money, Rs. 150. Yes, that wasn’t big, but at that moment it was a huge success for me.❤️
I realized that if I am able to make Rs.150 that means I can certainly make thousands & lakhs more by selling chai & talking to people. And guess what? I love doing both.
Voh kehte hain na "Agar aap kuch alag karne lagte ho toh kuch log aapko neeche zarur khichte hain''. Unfortunately, ye hamare desh ka dastoor hai.
Something similar happened to me. People started making fun of my name. Many started calling me 'Billo Rani'.
So I thought of changing the name.
I had a copy in which I had written 500+ names and after a lot of brainstorming, I finalized this name:
MBA Chaiwala (Mr. Billore Ahmedabad Chaiwala)
But again people made fun of my name.
They mocked me by saying, "See this guy did MBA and now he's selling chai here."
It felt bad but I realized 1 thing that criticism will always be there.
So I said to myself, "Naam giya tel lene, Apne kaam par focus kar."
I worked as hard as I could and finally, I started getting some results. But one more challenge was waiting for me.
The local goons started threatening me, preventing me from using the area wherein I used to sell chai.
I had to change my location 5 times because of this.
I was feeling devastated. I was crying and thinking "How much more do I have to face?"
After a few days, I gathered myself up and asked myself, "Prafull tu kab se in choti choti cheezo se ghabrane lag giya? Chal uth aur kaam kar."
I rented a small cafe and started working again.
This time things started falling by my side. Sales were increasing, and I started getting some recognition because of my name.
Now my next goal was to expand/scale my business & make things interesting.
I started thinking about how I can make MBA Chaiwala globally famous.
“Jeevan me parivartan hi nitya hai”
So I tried to innovate and constantly came up with organizing various events like:
• Book exchange program
• Mehfil e Kavita
• Ahmedabad Ludo Championship
• Music nights
But the event that made me globally famous was "Free Chai To Singles On Valentine's Day".
I thought about doing something for all our 'Beloved Singles'.
This event became the headline of every newspaper and news channel at that time.
I participated in Kerala Flood Relief Fund Raising which eventually turned out to be a substantial amount for the needy people and was largely covered by many media houses.
I also did fundraising for cancer patients and poor children.
I also campaigned with the Govt. of Delhi, serving chai with the purpose of development of the city.
I was also invited on @JoshTalksLive and @TEDx to share my story. The video got viral and got 1+ Million views in less than 24hrs.
Moreover, my story has also been shared in the book 'All You Need Is Josh' with the likes of @drriteshmalik, @riteshagar , @iRadhikaGupta , @warikoo , @teacheranand and @captraman & many more.
Thank you @supriyapaul93 & @JoshTalksLive for featuring me in this book.
These achievements are definitely heartwarming, but I'm not settling here.
We are a team of 35 people and have 5+ franchises, but I have bigger dreams.💪
I want to expand MBA Chaiwala globally.
If you want to be a part of MBA Chaiwala or want to own a franchise, do a fundraiser, invite me for wedding events/talk shows, reply to this tweet and we’ll reach out to you.
Thank you for reading till this point.
Just want to conclude by saying that if I can do this, you can too.
You can do anything and sell anything.
Believe in yourself and don't let any failure or any person stop you from chasing your dreams.❤️
I want to personally thank Vivek Billore, Dhawal Chaudhary, Sunil Chaudhary, Himanshu Dhadnekar, Parth Shah, Akshay Singh, Mandip Singh, Sneh Agarwal, Niharika Patidar, Shivam Dubey, Nitin Gehlot for supporting me in my 4 years of journey.
And a huge thanks to my parents 🙏
