Spain-Italy. A lot of interesting tactical aspects appeared during this fantastic match yesterday. One of them were Spain using Olmo as a false 9. I have looked a bit deeper into how Spain took advantage of this in the first half, and how Italy tried to cope with it.
(THREAD)
In the beginning, Italy pressed in a 4231. They often went man to man in the midfield, which left Olmo free between the lines. The ballside AM played a key role in opening this space for Olmo. By moving away from the CB on the ball they dragged their direct opponent away t.co
A few minutes later Italy changed their pressing structure to a 433. I believe the reason for that was to try and close the space between the lines for Olmo. Though, the consequence of this was that Busquets often became free and Italy were forced low. t.co
Though when Simon had the ball, they tried to go a bit higher and quicky changed their 433 to 4231 to be able to, among other things, put Busquets under pressure. Busquets was brilliant in solving these high pressure situations, which led to that they again were able to find Olmo t.co
After a while Italy again changed their pressing structure to be able to press higher and cope with Spain’s numerical superiority in midfield. This time one of CB’s went high to man mark Olmo between the lines and to make it 4v4. By doing this they were left 2v2 in the last line.
When this happened Spain often tried to take advantage of the equal situation and went more direct. t.co
Another aspect to it was that Italy’s wingers at times stayed more central to close space. Spain then used their fullback’s to break lines. The key’s to this was Olmo dropping even deeper to get rid of the CB and the FB’s low positioning, which led to W’s pressing.
This, together with the ballside AM moving away, opened space for Olmo between the lines. t.co
