A traitor or a great king?
The word “Jaichand” has become synonymous with Traitor. Day in and day out people use “Jaichand” loosely to mock traitors.
However, Maharaj Jayachandra has been at the receiving end of one of most vilifying conspiracy campaigns in history. #Thread
Maharaj Jaychandra - a king of the Gahadavala dynasty ascended the throne to one of the richest lands of Bharat in 1170 C.E.
In fact inscriptions found at Ayodhya dated 1184 C.E credit him with building Treta-ke-Thakur (Vaishnava) Mandir in Ayodhya.
Why was he then declared a traitor and seen as the reason for Maharaj Prithviraj`s defeat?
In 16th century C.E, around 400 years after the time of Maharaj Jaychandra a bardic and fantasy tale Ain-i-Akbari was written by Abu’l-Fazl ibn Mubarak (a courtier of Mughal Akbar)
In this historically inaccurate account, Abu’l-Fazl made up a story about Maharaj Jaychandra joining Ghurids against Maharaj Prithviraj in the Battle of Tarain.
In fact contemporary Islamic works of 12th cen C.E recognize Maharaj Jaychandra as a powerful opponent of Islam.
Other “distorians” give reference of the books like “Ek Lota Pani”. Again, this account was also fanned by the Abdul Hameed Lahori, a courtier of Shahjahan. In fact it is possible that “Ek Lota Pani” was inspired by Ain-i-Akbari.
Some give reference of Prithviraj Raso by Chand Bardai as an account of Maharaj Jaychandra`s betrayal.
On the contrary, the shortest recension (considered most authentic) of Prithviraj Raso never specifically mentions Maharaj Jaychandra joined Ghurids against Maharaj Prithviraj
Prthiviraj Raso as we have today has been rewritten many a times & has been deemed historically inaccurate by all historians.
In this story Jaychandra’s daughter Samyukta elopes with Prithviraj causing enmity between the two. However the existence of Samyukta itself is doubtful with no clear evidence on her existence.
It is ironical that Maharaj Jaychandra lost his life battling the very Ghurids he was supposed to be aligned with. He fought valiantly and till his last breath for the honour of his motherland.
