How to build successful habits, made simple.
Success is a product of installing the right habits and fulfilling those habits.
Did you know all habits have 4 stages? Let's check them out.
A thread ๐Ÿงต
1/11
1๏ธโƒฃ Cue
A cue is a trigger that starts the actions within a habit happening.
Cues are often learnt for rewards like money and fame, power and status, praise and approval, love and friendship, or a sense of personal satisfaction.
Cues then lead to a Craving.
2/11
2๏ธโƒฃ Craving
A craving follows the cue, they are the motivational force for completing the habit.
We do the habit because we want something at the end.
You want to be entertained so you turn on the TV.
You want to relieve stress so you smoke a cigarette.
3/11
3๏ธโƒฃ Response
The response is the actual action we do during the habit, it can be an action or thought.
Whether a response happens depends on how much friction is associated with the task and your motivation. If it requires more than you want to use, it won't happen.

4๏ธโƒฃ Reward
Finally, we have the reward. Every habit is about the reward.
Cues notice rewards
Cravings want the reward
Responses are obtaining the reward
Rewards are important because:
1) They satisfy us
2) They teach us

๐Ÿ”ธ Creating habits (1/2)
If you want to create habits:
- Identify a cue and make it obvious
- Make it attractive so we crave it
- Make it easy to do
- Make the reward satisfying
6/11
๐Ÿ”ธ Creating habits (2/2)
For example, if we wanted to create a habit to build an online audience, it might go like this.
Open Twitter (cue)
Want to keep a content streak going (craving)
Create new content daily (response)
Build an audience (reward)

๐Ÿ”ธ Removing bad habits (1/2)
If we want to remove bad habits, we just need to do the inverse of the above.
- Make cues invisible
- Make cravings unattractive
- Make responses hard to complete
- Make the reward unsatisfying
8/11
๐Ÿ”ธ Removing bad habits (2/2)
E.G to break the habit of getting coffee on the way to work to save money
- Drive a different way to work
- Realise the money spent on coffee
- Making the distance longer makes it harder to complete
- Make a coffee at work
