Meet Biswajit Sahu. He's a fisherman by profession & an archeologist by passion. His discovery has helped historians to trace history of Sundarban area back to Mauryan period. After his discovery ASI informally identified 20 sites in Sundarban for exploration & asked...
permission from govt to back independent exploration. Former regional director submitted a 35 page report to central govt(which wasn't answered).
Sahu was 14 when he had to leave school to become a daily wager. When he was 16 went to Kolkata for medical treatment...
The wait in govt hospital was long, to kill time one day he went to Indian museum. There he saw objects which are similar to items he would come across fishing.
Once back at the Sundarbans, he started to search for such items. While the other fishermen would return home,
Sahu would venture deep into the forests in search of the artefacts.
Later he started going to local history & archeology seminars with his finds. Soon historians & archeologists became intrigued, some gave him books on archeology. He started visiting universities...
to participate sessions on archeology.
Over the last 30 years he has collected 10,000+ artefacts. His collection includes stone tools (according to some archeologist Sundarban history goes back to Neolithic era), sculptures, terracotta objects, pottery & Brahmi inscriptions.
