Everyone suffers from unhappiness.
Here's a secret...
It doesn't mean what you think. 🧵
Studies have shown the average person has 16,000-60,000 thoughts per day.
80% are negative.
95% are the same repetitive thougts as the day before.
Knowing this, how do we tip the scales in our favor?
Let's find out what these thoughts mean, and use them for good.
When you feel unhappy, your mind is sending a signal.
A change needs to occur.
What type of change?
I've broken them down into 5 categories:
•Internal
•External
•Action you need to take
•Action you need to stop
•Something you need to learn
Let's dig in...
Internal:
Here's the good news, you're in control of internal change.
This can be either mental or emotional but typically entails a shift in thought process or approach to an issue.
Altering how you look at a situation can transform unhappiness into motivation.
External:
External changes are challenging.
We don't choose them & they're often out of our control.
Think of being laid off from a job.
Although you can't stop these changes from happening, you control how you move forward.
Focus on what will happen, not what has happened.
Action to Take:
Often, unhappy feelings are driven by an action we need to take but have been avoiding.
•Holding a grudge? Stop
•To-do list full? Knock some things out.
•Uncomfortable conversation looming? Have it, you'll thank me later.
Procrastination = unhappiness.
Action to Stop:
Often, it's not what you need to do, but what you need to stop doing.
Identify negative habits.
•Bad diet
•Too much TV
•Hanging with the wrong people
Negative habits drive unhappiness.
Don't trade a quick dopamine hit for hours, weeks, or months of regret.
Time to Learn:
Unhappiness is often a sign there is something you need to learn.
We become overwhelmed when faced with things we don't understand.
The good news?
Knowledge is more accessible than at any point in human history.
Level up your learning & watch unhappiness fade.
Bonus Challenge:
For the next 30 days keep a journal.
You only have to answer one question:
What am I unhappy about?
I'll bet where you start is not where you'll end up.
You'll narrow your focus to what really needs to change and become less overwhelmed in the process.
