Why a writing habit is important + 3 tips to journal like Marcus Aurelius
πŸ‘‡πŸΎ A thread
Your mind is designed to find faults in others, and hide the ones in yourself.
It’ll resist direct introspection by creating endless distractions.
Thinking in your head will keep you going in circles like a marathon Olympian
It is much more efficient to think on paper...
Writing unwinds your mind & unlocks your heart, enabling you to be in tune with your intuition.
A lot of accomplished people have attributed their success to their writing habit.
Marcus Aurelius was one of the greatest philosophers to have lived.
His best gift to humanity is his book β€œMeditations” - which is a compilation of his daily journals.
Here’s what you need to learn from him;
1 - Write to yourself
Marcus never intended for his writings to be published.
This allowed him to write without fear or prejudice.
Likewise, you don’t need great writing skills or interesting ideas to start journaling -
It is a personal therapy...
A) Journaling in the morning
Before your mind starts to complain & judge everything -
Start each day by listing the things you’re grateful for.
Then set your intentions for the day.
Prioritize yours tasks into urgent / important / very important
This will give you more oversight on your time & energy.
Write down models & heuristics that will help you navigate your day seamlessly.
Identify potential setbacks or triggering situations that could come and how you can wisely navigate them.
B) Journaling in the evening
By committing to a daily journal practice, you’ll rewire your brain to be more observant and conscious throughout the day.
Write to reflect on your day
Ask yourself
A)
How was my emotional state today?
Recall the times you were sad, angry or frustrated.
Try to expose your triggers
B)
What did I do well / bad today?
Highlight any progress you made on your goals and check if you embodied your ideal self.
2 - Write about yourself
Journaling, like meditation, forces you to introspect.
Like a seasoned therapist, you must be ruthless in your self-examination.
Expose your flaws, unhealed trauma & faux rationalizations.
Ask yourself;
What are my core values
What do I need to unlearn
Are my desires mine or mimetic
What are my self-limiting beliefs
How strong is my self-control
What are my deep fears
Why do I complain
Write down your behavioral flaws and gently nudge yourself each time towards improvement.
Don’t be discouraged if you have to address the same issues repeatedly.
3 - Write about your role models
Who are the people you admire the most?
What enviable qualities do you see in them?
What have they taught you about life?
Write down the words of wise men till they become muscle memory.
