Though many are very familiar to the historic churches of #Lalibela, let us explore some hidden facts & Trivia about that historic town.
What does #Lalibela mean?

Before the area was named #Lalibela the environs used to be known as "Roha". It was center of civilization of the Agaw people. The rulers of the area used to be known as " Wag Shum", a highest military and administrative rank in Agaw society.

In late 12th (early 13th) century, from a family of these "Wag Shums" a baby named Gebre-Meskel was born. He used to be swarmed by bees without getting stung. Amused by that, his mother remarks "He eats Laal" (Laal in old Agaw language means "honey"

Her remark caught on and everyone in the family and in the royal court started calling the child "Laal Yibelal" (ላል ይበላል) (He eats honey) The fact that the bees did not sting him was also viewed as a sign that he was divinely chosen to rule.

Other than being an attraction of tourists, #Lalibela is one of very few peaks to be chosen as space observatory spots by International Space Observatory
