With Lionel Messi now gone, it's up to the youngsters of LaLiga to step up and take up the mantle.
After analysing defenders & midfielders, today we'll look at the statistically best U24 forwards and CAMs in the Spanish top flight.
👇
|THREAD|
I've included U24 players to get a bigger sample as the pool was insufficient for U23s who have played at least 500 minutes in 2020/21.
Note for Barcelona fans - Ansu Fati has played just under 500 minutes and was therefore not included.
But he'd definitely make the list.
All the players were analysed in six specific categories:
• Goal contributions
• Finishing
• Attacking actions
• Creativity & involvement
• Transitional tendencies
• Defensive work rate
I'll reveal three in this thread. Let's go! 👇
The first graph measures goal contributions (goals+assists per90) & expected goal contributions (xG+xA per90) 📈
The obvious picks are in the top right quadrant but extreme over/ underperformance is equally unstable.
Players matching their xGA are the ones in the golden zone.
Isak (0.7 goal contributions per 90 from 0.62 xGoal contributions per 90) and En-Nesyri (0.7 from 0.67) are clear standouts.
Both show great finishing and are able to generate high-quality chances.
They overperformed xGA by a reasonable amount for it to be a consistent feature.
Rafa Mir and Fer Niño have underperformed their xGA, showing some room for improvement, but are still above-average in this category.
João Félix & Rodrygo, however, are among the biggest overperformers.
Their output is very unstable and unlikely to be consistently replicated.
By looking at shots, touches in the box per90 and goal conversion %, I've attempted to analyse their finishing a bit more 📈
Again, Isak and En Nesyri the clear standouts with high conversions and loads of shots and touches.
However, shooting with fewer touches is also good.
For instance, Mir shoots far more often but records fewer touches, signalling first-time finishes.
Ousmane Dembélé, on the other hand, is highly involved in the box but doesn't shoot as often.
Vinícius Júnior is the perfect example of a player unwilling to attempt shots too.
Finally, we'll look at the players who tend to engage the opponent most often through offensive duels and successful attacking actions per90 📈
Note, however, that being above average in either is a positive sign for overall offensive play, albeit not a be-all-end-all indicator.
Dembélé’s 13.52 offensive duels per 90 and 7.26 successful attacking actions per 90 put him in the outlier area.
The same can be said for both Emre Mor (14.37 & 6.33) and Vinícius (13.99 and 5.41).
These players are aggressive and proactive in attack.
Alexander Isak is a fairly obvious pick so I'll reveal him as one of the three players who made the shortlist.
The 21-year-old is an elite finisher with great positioning and attacking tendencies.
There's still room for improvement across the board but Isak is a star in making.
I'll end the data analysis here so that the thread isn't overly long.
