A thread on what the real problem is for “ruining football”, why it’s not Chelsea & City & debunking some common misconceptions to show my logic
First let’s make this clear, im well aware without heavy investment, Chelsea & City would not be in the position they are today, we’ve been successful bc of it, but besides the early big 5 you need investment to be successful NOW, I’ll explain why but 1st debunking misconceptions
Even in the last 10 years United are only £37m behind City according to transfermarkt (Chelsea £596m behind United😳) Also you get a LOAD of money from winning trophies right? City & Chelsea have invested wisely because they’ll get money back from winning, United ain’t atm
“But City have broken FFP!” Ok I can see why people think this but where’s the proof? Innocent till proven guilty, if it comes out they’ve broken it then yea that’s terrible, people complained that “Fergie paid refs” until there’s great evidence & proof it’s irrelevant
“Fergie never spent this much, he spent £33m on Rooney & £41m on Ferdinand, Pep spent more on Grealish” this one is really stupid, do you even know how market inflation works? Value of the £ has risen but here’s a list (thanks @CitySouljaa)
“But we’ve proved we were successful without money, you two haven’t so we are allowed investment” this is really dumb & biased, so you’re saying because of our spending other clubs can’t compete without huge money, but only big successful clubs can spend? So rather than…
… have a big six, you just want a big 3 of Liverpool, United & Arsenal who can spend whatever they want due to their success but nobody else can??? That makes the situation we are in even worse, but ofc it’s ok you’ll win things, stop acting like you care about other clubs
“We wouldn’t want our owners have that much money” nonsense, Newcastle, Arsenal & Burnley fans were begging for owners to splash the cash, Arsenal wanted a multi billionaire Spotify owner, if they won the CL with him are they ruining the game as you haven’t won it before?
“They’re only getting these fans because of their success” yea, just like most of your clubs then? Do you think if L’pool was in league 2 you’d turn on the tv as a kid & gone “I wanna support these”? Your dads team? He supported them during success, exception here for the locals
The only good debate I’ve heard is “you wouldn’t have this net spend without heavy investment in the first place” this is true, we wouldn’t have the fanbase to bring in the revenue, so we couldn’t have invested to work our way up, however this is where the real problem kicks in..
Between 1952/53 - 80/81 there was 14 different winners, in that same 29 year period since the Premier league began there’s only been 7 winners (5 of which are from the big 6) but how does that correlate to my point about the real problem in football?
So now unlike before, the biggest clubs have a HUGE amount of wealth from sponsorships, advertisement, broadcasting rights etc, it’s near impossible for clubs to compete without a huge investment of their own owners from elsewhere
The Prem decided to let billionaire owners in, they will buy a load of players, increasing the advertisement of the league & furthering the gap of the big 6 from the rest of the league even further, Chelsea & city do this but don’t hate us for the Prem letting us do it?
Also if for some reason you don’t believe that buying these big players for big clubs doesn’t advertise the league that well, just look at the Messi situation, Barca have lost 5m followers so quickly, while people are now willing to watch Ligue 1 for him
So there’s only three ways you can be successful in this league since the 2000s, be part of the original big 5 so you had a load of advertisement etc, have a rich owner take over like City, or in a near impossible scenario take advantage of a season where all of the big 6 do bad
Ofc somehow Leicester did this but that was defying 5000-1 odds, & what happened afterwards? The big 6 invested heavily to ensure that didn’t happen again, Leicester nearly got relegated & while they are doing well now, no team outside of the big 6 has won this league twice
Even if Chelsea & City didn’t invest heavily, the league would just be run by United, Arsenal & L’pool with nobody able to compete with them but shall we blame them for ruining the league with their advertisement money? No it’s the Prems fault for allowing this to happen
Let’s make this clear to, the original big 5 was lucky that the Prem & Sky offered these deals during a time they were successful, e.g if this was in the 50s, L’pool & Everton would lose out, Chelsea, Wolves & Burnley now profit instead, there goes Liverpool’s Champions leagues
So how can we stop “football being ruined by money”? FFP was supposed to do this but when you see the crazy money that’s being spent clearly it doesn’t work (or UEFA don’t care because more money in the game means more money for them)
I won’t pretend to have the answer but my solution would be a wage cap, that way teams can’t just take players from developing clubs with huge wages, would the Premier league allow it? I doubt it as they’d probably lose money to
End of thread
As I said if Chelsea & City didn’t invest heavily (blame the prem for letting us do it) other clubs would & do spend heavily which causes a problem anyway, RTs would be appreciated this took a long time to make, or you can just keep making causal takes for clicks👌
