Those were upper class people. They were rich, affluent & westernized. But still a very tiny minority. You wouldn't have found them outside of Kabul. Here is how a majority of young Afghan women dressed in 1950s-1970s.This was much before the advent of Taliban. All pics from Kabul
Most of these upper class, affluent people migrated out of Afghanistan from 1980s onwards because they could afford to leave a war torn country. You will find most of them settled down in western nations today where they have become even more westernized.
I was a personal acquaintance of one such person from Afghanistan. Her ancestors were originally warlords from Wardak. They left Afghanistan and settled down in the US. From the outside, the woman was very westernized like the people in that picture and spoke impeccable English.
Although she was westernised from outside, her political thoughts were very revealing. She placed the entire blame of Afghanistan's condition on western powers like US and Russia and basically vindicated Taliban as reactionary defence. She was also a huge Zakir Naik fan.
I told her Wardak's etymology comes from Sanskrit and many Buddhist & Shaivite archaeological remains were found in Wardak. Which meant that her ancestors were very likely Buddhist or Hindu.
She said -"Yes, our ancestors had worshiped idols which is why we are suffering now"
She believed Taliban was primitive. She thought regressive practices like Burqa/Chador had no place in the pristine Islam of Prophet and not mentioned in Quran. And that later Muslims borrowed these "regressive" ideas from non Muslim neighbors. Like Ghoonghat of Hindus
Peak liberalism
