1/ Good day, #MedTwitter, and welcome to the latest installment of #ReadingRoom. Dim the lights, and prepare to correlate clinically!
Take a look at the x-ray below: what is the labeled object? (hint: where is it?)
2/ Inside the aorta, youโ€™re looking at a balloon pump.
Is it in the right place? What happens if it is placed too proximal or too distal?
3/ The IABP sits in the aorta; if advanced too far it will occlude the L subclavian, while if it is not advanced far enough it may occlude the renal arteries.
What is the IABP used for? How might it work?
4/ See the graphic below for the idea behind the IABP. In short, the goal is to increase coronary perfusion and reduce afterload for temporary cardiac support.
What are the indications and contraindications for IABP?
5/ Big thanks as always to @SalimNNajjar for the beautiful graphic which delineates the indications for and contraindications against placing an IABP.
6/ Thatโ€™s it for this weekโ€™s #ReadingRoom. Thanks also to our editor for this series @TomMulveyMD. You can find this byte and more on our website: coreimpodcast.com
