Multiple sculptures of Mahishasuramardini form of Durga have been found in India. Alexander Cunningham described the 12-handed form of the goddess in the 6th cave of Udayagiri caves.
Text from ASI Annual Reports Vol X, p. 50
In earlier forms of Mahishashuramardini, she had 12 hands compared to the present 10 hands of Durga celebrated in Bengal. Back then she was portrayed with 10 additional hands in the back and a pair of hands in the front. See the Udayagiri cave Durga compared with present image.
All these different forms of Durga are seen slaying the buffalo demon, that's why the name's Mahishashuramardini. Her hands are full of weapons and objects that different gods gave her when she was formed from the 'teja' of the gods.
Date of Udayagiri Cave durga: 6th-7th century

Durga appears as a goddess in practically all Hindu texts: Rigveda, Atharvaveda, Mahabharata, Ramayana.
Panini mentioned it in his Asthadhyayi.
This claim that Durga puja is only a Bengali cultural phenomenon and not a Hindu festival is utter nonsense.
