Infomercials get A LOT of flack
But the great ones are a masterclass in
- storytelling
- offer creation
- And direct response
Here are my notes on 5 of the top-revenue generating infomercials of all time
1. The George Foreman Grill
Since launch, they’ve reported moved more than 100 million units
That translates into over $137 million in personal earnings for George.
More than he ever made in his boxing career
The guy know business and boxing
But why did it sell so well?
Alignment of:
- The offer (fat cutting grill)
- The celebrity endorsement (the lean, mean, fighting machine himself )
- And the message (“it knocks the fat out!”).
In a lot of ways, it's the perfect offer.
A lot to unpack here and study for modern day DTC brands.
This one is also FULL of catch phrases.
Important because it makes it easy for your customers to tell a story.
“Fat goes, flavor stays”
“The fat goes into the pan NOT of inside your body.”
And of course, "KNOCKS THE FAT OUT!"
2. Proactive
Excellent job of normalizing adult acne.
Few had done this before.
The focus was on teens previously.
So positioning opened up a new market and voiced deep unspoken pain point.
Also, use of doctors takes credibility of message to a 10/10
And if you watch, notice the continuous use of ‘system’ in the ad.
It’s complete.
It solves your problem in a new way.
It's not just a wash (like others).
It's ... Wash + Toner + Moisturizing.
You need to try it.
And you gotta love that push into the autoship program.
$39 today is really $39 every 2 months.
That’s a $240/yr customer
No wonder they reported pull in over $1 billion per year
3. P90x
Grossed a crazy $400 million+
Even more shocking is the fact that they are not selling gear or equipment.
This was an info product at scale.
What they nailed was making you believe you could do it if you just gave it 90 days.
Look at this transformation:
In the commercial, you see 100s of them.
Notice how they use the lack of celebrity endorsement as a strength
“UNLIKE OTHER PRODUCTS, we don’t rely on celebrity endorsements. We use real takes our customers send in.”
When they zig, you ZAG.
And you GOTTA love that unique mechanism: “Muscle confusion”
You know all those times you progress stalled before?
Yeah, that’s normal.
That’s called muscle plateau
The solution? Muscle confusion at specific intervals keeps making progress.
In other words, p90x = answer
4. The SNUGGIE
Sold 30 million blankets.
Simple product. MASSIVE painpoint.
And unbelievable price point (just $14.95!)
And very underrated bonus for core customer avatar (people reading on couch)
5. TOTAL GYM
Over $1.2 billion in gross sales with Chuck Noris as the leading spokesperson.
Can’t understate the value of Noris as a 35+ year user.
Noris credits his shape in all his movies to Total Gym.
Wanna be like Chuck? You need Total Gym.
But also very clever payment structure.
Will ship it to you for $14.95
But get this: product is actually over $1k
But once you have it in your home, no way you're sending it back.
Too clunky.
Don't want to admit failure.
Fishy? Yeah, but can't deny it worked.
