Interested in using How-to Schema in your content?
I've been tracking this feature closely since rich result support on Google first started in May of 2019.
Here's 4 little-known facts about How-to Schema rich results with relation to SEO 👇
#1 When FAQ and How-to rich results first launched, How-to rich results would only show on mobile. It was only in Oct of 2020 where desktop support started: brodieclark.com – but Google still hasn't updated their guidelines (so not officially: developers.google.com).
#2 On desktop, there's only 1 format where How-to rich results can display. On mobile, there's several (at least 3). One format that can display on mobile is a carousel with images when marked up. A big advantage of this format is the ability to set your own jump-to links.
#3 A difference among FAQ & How-to is the application. FAQ can apply to most page types. Whereas How-to is appropriate only when the main focus is the how-to. Otherwise, both now take up a similar amount of space on desktop (after the recent FAQ update: brodieclark.com).
#4 There are limits in place on Google which prevent every result from having a How-to rich result treatment. With this in mind, you will never come across more than 3 How-to rich results on a single SERP. This was a top misconception in my @Moz article: moz.com.
Hope you've enjoyed this short thread with some of my findings on How-to Schema on Google. Were there any that you were surprised about or need more clarification on? Feel free to leave a comment!
