"The Enemy (Marathas) too distinguished themselves, and fought so well, that it was beyond the capacity of other races!
... Those dauntless bloodshedders (Marathas) did not fall short in fighting and doing glorious deeds!"
— Ahmad Shah Durrani, 1761 CE, Letter to Madhosinh.
Abdali despatched his famous letter of victory to Rai Madhosinh Jaipurkar, describing the 3rd Battle of Panipat fought between Marathas and the Pashtun allied hordes, in which he praised Maratha valour.
The full letter as well as the abridged letter have been posted here.

All sources of people involved in Third Battle of Panipat support that it was the greatest war ever fought in (mainstream) history of Hindustan.
Marathas are recorded as fielding the finest army in history of Hindustan, surpassing any army ever deployed by the Mughals.
AFGHAN SOURCES:
"Indeed, *this was the Greatest Battle ever fought in Hindustan*, nor is there any other instance on record in which such prodigious armies were brought into the field."
— Gulistan-E-Rahmat (Life of Hafiz Rahmat Khan, Veteran of Panipat, pg. 66)
"They (Marathas) threw themselves upon the center of the enemy's formation like a lightning flash consuming a cornfield, and performed such deeds of heroism as no man had seen *before this battle* and *no ear had heard of*."
— Ahmad Shah Abdali (Letter to Rai Madhosinh Jaipurkar)
"Whatever could be expected from human valour and exertion, you (Marathas) have done ; and the deeds of that day (14th January 1761) will live forever in the memory of mankind."
— Shujāh-Ud-Daulah's Diwan Pandit Kashiraj to Maharaja Jankojirao Shindeshahi (pg. 43 of Memoirs)
MARATHA SOURCES:
"In this Kaliyuga, an actual war resembling the Mahabharata was fought. Many nobles and illustrious chiefs and soldiers fell..."
— Panipatāchi Bakhār, Verse 27
"After the battle of Pandavas & Kauravas in the Dwaparyuga, after that one, this battle was fought between these two (Marathas & Afghans). On the field of Kurukshetra where death brings salvation, who else fought the Bharati War in this Kaliyuga or any other previous Kaliyuga?...
... No Amir, or Badshah like Shah Jahan or Aurangzeb, in fact no other king ever waged a valorous war like the Bharati War!"
— Panipatāchi Bakhār, Verse 47
"For nearly eight hours a fierce battle was fought. Never in the past was such a battle fought. It is unlikely it will ever happen again in all the three worlds. The king of Devas himself witnessed it with astonishment and wonder."
— Panipatāchi Bakhār, Verse 51p
"A battle such as this never happened in the past and will not be repeated in the future."
— Panipatāchi Bakhār, Verse 65
"No Hindus ever fought like this nor had been broken like this before. There had never been such a time, nor there ever would be."
— Bhausahebānchi Bakhār (Translation Quoted in Ian Raeside, The Decade of Panipat, 1751-1761 {Bombay: Popular Prakashan, 1984} pg. 945-996)
EUROPEAN:
"Here ensued that famous battle, of which those who were eye-witnesses report that it was the greatest ever fought in Hindustan, for the Marathas being beset with enemies in rear & front saw no possibility of flight & resolved to fell their lives as dear as they could"
SOURCE: The Annual Register of World Events, 1787-1789 CE published in London, pg. 26.
A European Source from nearly 3 decades after Third Battle of Panipat confirms the assertion maintained by eye-witnesses that the battle was the greatest ever fought in history of India.
