A nachniya who disrespected Rādhārāṇī years ago found Kanyādāna regressive and wanted it to make Kanyamaan. Another 2 penny director who overnight has become an InTeLectUaL had same thought and wondered when we ditched progressive Svayambara for this. +
This is nothing new. Feminists have always had problem with marriage as an institution itself, forget rituals. In next decade the rhetoric will be "we were a society of live in-s. When did marriage come into practice." This reminded me an episode from Brahma Purāṇa. ++
Mā Pārvatī was doing Tapasyā in order to get Mahādeva as Her husband. But when Mahādeva Himself appears and asks Her hand She says the following ++

"Lord! I have no free agency and it's my father, Himālaya who can give my hand to You in marriage. I am only his daughter. You should go and ask him."
++

Interesting to note that despite She was doing Tapasyā only to get Mahādeva as husband, though She Herself was the mother of the world She doesn't act independently. Do notice the word 'मम दान'. She didn't feel any inferiority. ++
There lies the key. Explanations can only be given to someone who is an insider. In Gītā two things are said; श्रद्धावान् लभते ज्ञानम् (4.39) and संशयात्मा विनश्यति (4.40) One with Śraddhā gets knowledge and a doubting one perishes. ++
