6 copy hacks from a 22 year old copywriter
that’ll make you 6-figures
a thread 👇🏻
copywriting is a constant process of iterating, testing, and learning. you rarely ever get something right on the first try.
for the last 6 months, i’ve been writing anywhere from 2000-3000 words a day of copy.
i believe i’m qualified to share these tips with you.
tip 1: learn to write as fast as you can
beginner writers don’t realize that being able to write fast is almost as important as writing well.
when you write fast, you can write more.
when you can write more, you can make way more money.
not to mention that your clients will love you for it.
speed is just practice.
you can write fast when you understand the customer, the business, and the format really well.
getting to know all 3 of those things in advance will help you write faster.
tip 2: less is more
you don’t need to over-explain your product in the email.
use less words to make it sound more premium.
less copy means that it’s more likely will be curious and click on the email.
that’s the whole point of the email. to win the click.
subject line: new drop
body 1: finally, the ultra-comfy, ultra-soft, stretchy undies from cardinal are here in 5 new patterns!
body 2: they’re here. click to reveal.
see the difference?
first one is saying too much. the second one is mysterious and curiosity inducing.
tip 3: draw inspo from everywhere.
at least 3 times a day, i’ll see something and immediately think to myself:
“that’d be a great email”.
good ideas are ALL around you.
pain points are around you.
customer avatars are around you.
you need to see the world as a marketer.
pay close attention to the so-called NPCs on the street, because those are your customers.
take what they say & do, and reverse engineer it into a campaign idea that will resonate with them.
simpler than it sounds.
tip 4: dumb. it. down.
when explaining a product, people like to make it sound EPIC and COOL.
you lose buyers that way.
your copy should get people excited, but your description of the product should be so straightforward and upfront.
for example, let’s say you’re writing copy for a neck pillow.
a) this pillow elevates your sleep game and keeps you stress & pain free.
b) this neck pillow rests under your neck to provide extra support for a sore neck.
a is too hypey. b tells you what you need to know.
tip 5: if you’re funny, include humor. if you’re not funny...don’t.
i’m not convinced that being funny is something you can learn.
you either have it or you don’t.
humor works WONDERS when used properly...
but completely backfires when your jokes are bad.
if you’re not funny, go through and listen to the podcast ad-reads from comedians like andrew schulz, theo von, brendan schaub, etc.
they’ll give you funny lines to manipulate and steal for a different product.
small tweaks, and it’s no longer stolen.
andrew schulz was doing an ad for manscaped. he said:
do your balls look like the floor of a barbershop? get manscaped.
i was able to take this idea and run with it when i was writing for balls.
people loved it.
just learn from the pros and tweak it.
tip 6: your first draft is never your best work.
if you’re writing an important project that needs to be perfect, here’s what you do.
if it’s due on friday, write your first draft on wednesday.
review it on thursday and make edits.
edit again on friday, and submit it.
looking at your copy with fresh eyes allows you to make improvements with no ego.
there is ALWAYS something you can change to make it better.
and it’s much easier to edit decent copy to make it good than to write good copy from the start.
regarding speed, i believe it’s actually faster to vomit 500 words into a gdoc (even if it sucks) and make tweaks afterward
than it is to make it perfect on the first try.
that expectation is intimidating and leads to writers block.
just let it flow.
thanks for reading, friend.
i hope you’re able to take some inspo from what i’ve learned in my last 18 months of writing for e-commerce brands and personal brands.
