20 productivity hacks that will change your life:
A thread:
1/ Notifications
Little red numbers by your apps bugging you?
Settings > notifications > (gmail/messages/etc) > turn off banners.
Problem solved.
Notifications are the modern-day distractions.
So try turning off 90% them. It will make a world of a difference.
2/ The most UNDERRATED thing to improve your sleep... do not eat within 3 hours of going to bed.
You will sleep way worse if you eat right before bed.
Learned this one from @elonmusk on the @joerogan podcast.
3/ Your perception of how much sleep you need is not accurate.
From the world’s foremost sleep expert, Matthew Walker:
“with chronic sleep restriction over months or years, an individual will actually acclimate to their impaired performance, lower alertness, and reduced energy"
4/ “Fatigue makes cowards of us all” - Shakespeare (used often by Vince Lombardi)
Do not make big decisions, have crucial conversations, or try anything drastic while exhausted.
5/ Heart pump
Not feeling it? Do something to change your physical and mental state.
100 jumping jacks will do the trick by getting your heart rate up and your blood flowing in 2-3 minutes.
Other things to try:
- listen to an awesome playlist
- take a 20 minute nap
6/ Swipe files
We are already cyborgs - we bring mini computers with us everywhere and refer to them non-stop.
One of the best ways to take advantage of this is to have an EASILY accessible way to add information. I use the Notes app because its so low barrier.
E.g. "Phrases"
7/ Dilate your gaze
Focus on something 1 foot away for 30 seconds.
Then on something 3 feet away for 30 seconds.
And last, on something 10+ feet away for 30 seconds.
Ta Duh! You have rewired your mind to improve focus.
From the Huberman Labs podcast on ADHD and focus.
8/ Diving into a completely new subject?
As @tferriss shares, if you will read 2-3 books on a subject, you will be ahead of 90% of people.
9/ Parkinson’s Law
Work expands to fill the time allotted to it.
Solution = set time limits.
Try to do in 1 hour what you would normally do in 2.
Remember, “the world rewards you for value added, not time spent” - @JamesClear
10/ To perfectionists
If you can get an A- in 2 hours, you can get an A in 6.
Is that tradeoff worth it to you (or would you rather get more done)?
11/ Money + happiness hack
“Spend extravagantly on things you love, and cut mercilessly on things you don’t.” - @ramit
12/ The foot tap
Have nervous energy?
Shaky legs when speaking? Shaky hands for surgeons?
Problem: too many commands sent telling your body to stay still.
Solution: intentionally command a body part to move. Tap your foot or your finger. Your body will stop quivering.
13/ Time blocking
Choose your 3 most important tasks for the week.
Guess the amount of time each task will take.
Multiply that amount by 1.5x.
Put each of the three tasks on your schedule and make sure you are not interrupted during those hours.
Learned from @stephsmithio
14/ Brain.fm
An app that uses music that scientifically helps you focus.
You can choose 30 minute deep-work sessions,
90 minute light work sessions
Or chill sessions. Free 2-week trial on the app.
15/ Pomodoro method
25 minutes deep work, 5 minute rest.
Or 50 minutes deep work, 10 minute rest.
Repeat 2-4x.
Note, you will be super productive but it is exhausting.
16/ The one big thing framework
Choose one task that will make today a win. If that’s the only thing you do, you've still won.
Anything extra is exactly that… extra.
Learned from @ShaanVP
17/ House hack
Buy a single-family home. Live in it. Rent out extra rooms by month or on airbnb.
Buy a 2-4 unit building. Live in it. Rent out extra units.
Subsidize your mortgage (or cover it).
Not easy to do in the current real estate market, but it's definitely possible.
18/ To gain muscle
How much protein do you think you need? Minimum guidelines say 0.36g of protein per pound of body weight.
But if you are trying to gain muscle (you are lifting heavy weights), experts say you need 0.7-1.1g of protein per pound.
That’s a lot of protein.
19/ "You're the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with." - Jim Rohn
What are your 1-2 priorities for the next 6 months?
Surround yourself with people who are good at those things.
Can be short-term, can be long-term.
20/ The 30 minute weekly review
Schedule your priorities.
Set and review goals.
I have 100% conviction that this is THE BEST productivity hack out there.
A week is short enough that it is tangible, but long enough that you think long-term.
