Our hair is dead.
Biologically speaking, once keratin cells grow out of their follicles and reach the skin’s surface, they die. However, the manipulation, shearing, reverence for, controversy around, and even sale of these strands could not be more alive.
On a global scale, hair is a billion-dollar industry that includes everything from conditioning and styling products to the organic material itself.
It is a powerful tool in shaping one’s identity and understanding of beauty, health, sex, gender, race, religion, and status.
Is there a politics of hair? To what extent is hair care a tradition? Material culture? A physical form of oral history? How can hair be a potential for assimilation or a marker of cultural pride? An affirmation? A sign of beauty? Of pride? Of shame? Of power?
