Mahmud al-Kashgari’s world map made in the 11th century denotes a region near the Indus river which he terms ‘بلاد الزط’, evidently referring to pastoral non-elite tribes of the Indus Valley region. The term ‘الزط’ is an early Arabisation of the Sanskrit word ‘Jatt’. (Continued)
It’s important to note here that other Panjabi tribes, esp. Rajputs & Gujjars would have fallen under this umbrella term.
Interestingly ‘Jatt’ is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘Jartika’ which in the Mahabharata was a branch of the ‘Bahikas’, a term used to denote all Panjabis.
